This species is found in wet mountain forests ie cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru, Columbia and Ecuador. The flower is 4.5" and is non-fragrant. This is one of my favorites. This one came from Columbia and although I like some other clones of this species for more intense lip striation I like this one for the contrast of the lip against the stripped flower.
Very nice, Ron.
Tom, I am still trying to perfect the culture on this one. I think I will be moving it to Sphag with treefern fibers.
Quite a large flower there! Very nice, Ron
I think it will do well in that mix, Ron. I have my M. sanderiana in moss and it is doing fine, but I might need to repot it more often.
well large flowers usually mean large plants in this genus. This has a nice tall spike which is a plus. Many Maxillarias hold their flowers at the base of the leaves. This one's spike is 8" tall.
just stunning ron!
hmm,i guess this guy likes it cooler, right?
I want one! Even if it's not fragrant, it's such a neat looking flower.
Stunning! Goes to my wishlist (or any other of the lists I have...). Is it temp. tolerant?
I agree - stunning!
Cheers,
