    Default My "water culture" experiment

After seeing people put phals in water and then get such amazing results I thought I would try it myself. Two were put into water a couple months ago, the third, and most wilted is a newer member. I am shocked to report huge new roots, new leaves....one of the original two has two keikei's also growing nicely along its sides. All three are doing well. I dump the water and put in clean time to time, but mostly I just top off the existing water and they are doing fine. I may have to "save" some more phals soon!

I hope others experimenting with this will add their pics and stories as well. This has been very interesting....

hi connie, can you post the pictures with a side-view? I would like to get a visual of how the roots are and your mounting. Do the plants touch the water or they are just above the water with only the roots in water?

wow, i'd like to give this a try, btw how much water does it get i mean do you fill the
container with water or just until the roots are submerged? and how often do you replace
or top off the water? I have 2 phals that has crown rot and both have only 1 leaf left.
This looks like an interesting project to try.

This won't work for crown rot...try hydrogen peroxide or some physan 20. The roots actually are in the water. I don't let the base of the plant touch water, just roots. I took water bottles and cut them off, or used clear plastic containers from the deli. I'll try to upload a picture tomorrow. I'm having trouble with my picture program tonight.

what genera of orchids are suitable for water culture? Do vandaceous orchids (specifically Ascocentrum ampullaceum) like water culture? I've one of them and it is having difficulty rooting. Maybe it needs lot more humidity and my options are to wrap it with a piece of coconut husk or try water culture on it. What do you folks suggest?
