Hi everyone! I spent a full day at the Fascination of Orchids show yesterday and picked up some real beauties and bargains. Amongst my purchase was an Angraecum Veitchii. I've been wanting one of these for awhile and I found a superb plant for a great price. Now I just need to know how to care for it! It's in a 6" pot in sphag right now and is just about done blooming. If I repot it, would you recommend sphag, bark, hanging basket, etc? I would like to grow this outside since I'm limited on space and it's a big plant. Will it tolerate SoCal weather well? Any growing tips are welcomed! Thanks!
Nancy, the one I've got here was originally potted in coarse bark, but that was years ago. I haven't repotted it, and it's since put out all kinds of aerial roots. It's growing on the cool end of the GH, where the humidity doesn't ever get below 65, and temps never above 90. If you're going to grow it outside where you are, I think your biggest battle is going to be with dryness and summer heat. If you don't want to spend a lot of time fussing with keeping it moist and cool, you should probably start it in sphag layered with styro peanuts so the roots don't stay soggy, but I imagine you'll end up experimenting with different things as time goes on to see what works best under your conditions.
