Clonal Epithet

Can you register a clonal epithet if you weren't the original cultivator. Example: If you had a Lc Irene Finney seedling and it bloomed then you bought it and bloomed it again. Could you register is as Lc. Irene Finney 'example'. Then clone from there with the new name?

Cultivar names, what you are calling a clonal epithet, are used to recognize individual plants. Those names are not registered, per se, unless the plant wins an award. The cultivar name is recorded as part of the award process to recognize that individual plant. If you give a cultivar name and then sell that plant and it is not awarded, the buyer can potentially give it a different cultivar name. If you buy a seedling from someone, then yes, you can give it whatever cultivar name you choose. If you clone that particular plant, then the cultivar name would follow in the clones derived from it.

I thought the cultivar epithet would be ie: Irene Finney?...maybe i read wrong. So ultimately if you named a clone Lc. Irene Finney 'hound dog' and it never got an award. Then sold clones. The next owner can change the cultivar name? wouldnt this confuse lineage and the specific plant it came from....lol so the trick is to get it awarded as soon as possible..

To clarify, Irene Finney is the "grex name" and 'Hound Dog' would be the "cultivar name". Yes, it would cause confusion, but I'm sure it happens frequently. It is easy for the cultivar names to get lost and there are some who are less ethical than others.
