The root system in this plant is very bad, I'm not sure if it's because the abuse it's had or because of the mix. I have a mix of lava rock, medium/large bark (which I can't cut... any ideas for that?) and charcoal. I could add perlite as I have it for other plants. What can I replace the coconut husk with? And what can I do about the bark? I don't have any tools to cut it with and they don't sell smaller pieces. Anything I could replace it with? I'd like to have everything ready before the keiki has to be separated.
Don't worry about the bark. For the coconut husk use chopped up sphagnum moss. The coconut husk is to help retain a little water.
