Default My Fragrant Hedge 3: An Unlikely Hybrid Perpetual

No, this isn't exactly native to the Philippines, but this particular rose has adapted quite well. Though I'm not exactly sure, I believe this to be an Old Garden Rose, probably a Hybrid Perpetual because of its ability to rebloom. It is the third bush in my mixed hedge.

Two years after I planted it, the bush is now around 12 feet tall and almost as wide. At first I was worried that the huge sampaguita nearby would kill it. I was wrong. Now it's just as large and robust as its native neighbor.

Fully double, three to four inch carmine pink flowers of classic old rose shape and fragrance. Usually blooms in small clusters. Matte medium green leaves on long, arching canes.
    Fragrant day and night.

Nice roses you got there eh? How do you keep the pests away?

Beautiful roses, Angel. 12 by 12 - seems like it is growing amazingly well.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Jojo.
That's one good thing about old garden roses or those that were introduced around or before 1867. They are almost pest free, except for the occasional chewed leaf. They are also low maintenance plants.
Now, the same is not true of modern roses. In another part of my small lot, I have a few modern hybrid teas and floribundas. Hybrid teas are the workhorses of the rose cutflower industry. They are magnets for aphids and black spot, and labor intensive too when it comes to trimming and dead heading the spent blooms.

I do too Tom, more than I like the hybrid teas and grandifloras and their modern kin, most of which don't even have any fragrance at all. Unfortunately, aside from this one, there doesn't seem to be any other old garden rose available in my part of the country. I tried to order online from some reputable American breeders but there was a lot of paperwork involved.

Thank you Bruce. Maybe the size is the effect of a growing season that is all of 12 months a year.

    Hello Randy!
Would you be surprised if I tell you I only have around 110 square meters? That space includes my house, garage, and all my plants. And I didn't even plan much where to plant what except for the fragrant mixed hedge. Just got lucky perhaps. ;-)
