Hi everyone,
My question for the day: Are stones in a humidity tray helpful humidity-wise or do they only contribute to make the tray more "attractive"?

Hi everyone,
My question for the day: Are stones in a humidity tray helpful humidity-wise or do they only contribute to make the tray more "attractive"?

I think they basically serve to keep the orchid up out of the water.
I'm sorry Bruce, I made a mistake.....I should have elaborated and explained why I was asking.....I didn't mean to be vague. I see now that I didn't complete my thoughts and make myself clear.
I have a little Paph that I decided to bring inside from the greenhouse and sit on a humidity tray in front of a window. For my tray, I filled a dish with water and put an upside down plastic basket inside to sit my plant on (same concept as a tray sold online).....rather than sit my orchid directly on stones slightly above the water level. I began to wonder if I should lower the water level and add stones around the basket or else remove the basket and use stones and water solely. I'm sure this sounds very trivial, but I thought maybe the stones would help create a slight bit more humidity via water dispersement....maybe so? not? Just a thought. I know the tray is not going to raise humidity much....only a few %, but every little bit helps. I believe I remember reading a post from you in the past commenting that you use a tray(s) in your home. If I am correct, approx. how much humidity increase do you get? And what are your thoughts on stones? I've included some pics.
Thank you in advance,
Vicki
I like to use glass marbles, color, color, color!
Same to you, Cindi.....I apologize that I failed to make myself clear. Also, I agree that pretty marbles or stones look very attractive in a tray. I love to play with color, so we think alike. (Please read my post reply to Bruce...pics included)
Thanks for your reply,
Vicki

How about a pair of betta in it, or maybe some Anubias barteri var nanas to decorate. I love anything natural

Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish), anabantoids which means it uses its labyrinth lungs to breathe, thus no need for elaborate setup.
Anubias barteri var nanas (dwarf nanas), is an aquatic plant that is very very hardy, can tolerate a huge range of pH levels. It blooms with a white flower if it managed to stick some leaves out of the water.
