Mounting orchids on cacti wood

Hello. I went on a trip last week and I brought some cacti (Trichocereus pasacana also called Echinopsis atacamensis) wood. I bought one that is slightly rounded, like most barks used for orchids. I wanted to experiment with it. Do you think it would be suitable to grow orchids on it? Has anybody tried?

It's not very rough but it's very porous.

Never tried it, but my guess is that they'd be pretty happy on it. Do you know if it is long-lasting or not?

I don't know how well it will tolerate water. Looks long-lasting besides that, there are even houses made of this wood. But I'll probably give it a shot soon.

I bet that the orchids will LOVE it! They can dig their roots into all the nooks and crannies. Because it is so porus, it won't hold a lot of water...:-( Try it and let us know?! ) Betty :-)

Phals will love it. Bulbo will be otherwise.

What did you decide? What orchid are you thinking of mounting on it. It looks great to me.

Well, I don't have a lot of orchids. I was thinking about maybe a Miltonia, or a Brassavola. I have to transplant both, I was going to put both on a pot instead of wood. Miltonia would do better, right?

Hola, I think it should be very suitable as the many holes allow for ample air circulation/flow which orchids love. If you live in a dry area I would add some shredded coconut fibers in the root area before mounting to keep some moisture as the wood looks very dry. Good luck!
