    Default Phalaenopsis primary hybrid questions

    Hi all,
    just a small question.
I saw that there is a registered cross, primary hybrid, between Phalaenopsis gigantea and amboinensis, with gigantea being the pollen parent. This one is called David Lin, registered back in 1974.
Does a cross of the same species, but the order of pod pollen reversed qualify for the same name? Or is a new registration in order?

What about crossing this primary hybrid with another primary hybrid? How would the namegiving be done then?

    Kind regards,
    Wouter

No change in name regardless of pod parent.

A cross should always be listed with the pod parent first, but it gets the same name either way. Registration records will always reflect the direction of the cross as it was first registered, but it doesn't matter.

Crosses of hybrids are registered and treated in exactly the same way. Pod parent x pollen parent is registered, but the order doesn't matter after that in terms of naming. Only the parents of the cross matter, not the species in the background.

Thanks guys, so what I've got here is a Phalaenopsis sp. "David Lin" right?
Cool to know, so I can correctly update my orchid list.
    Kind regards,
    Wouter

Close. You have Phalaenopsis David Lim (with an M), with no quotes. And it is not a species (sp.). David Lim is a grex (or cross, or hybrid) name.

hey, thank you for the correction. I'm pretty new to the grex names. So Phalaenopsis David Lim it is then. I'm still happy to have it, no matter what the name might be, such cute flowers.

This page should help you with understanding the conventions in naming orchids: Orchid Names and Naming- RVO Orchid Care. This article was also published in our forum's book ORCHIDS THROUGH OUR EYES.
