Default Pictures of the floods in my area

Every year around November we get very heavy rains here but in 2005 and this year we experienced exceptionally heavy rain resulting in floods. This year we have one of the worst floods in decades. The rains started on 29 Oct and by Monday 1 Nov all the outlying areas were inundated. The place where I live is on a little hillock about 50 ft high and is spared from the floods but half a mile all around us is flooded and we are completely cut off from the rest of the country. 12,000 people have been evacuated to relief centres. Luckily there has been only one casualty, an elderly German woman who was visiting her son working here. She, her son and daughter-in-law were swept away by the flood waters when they tried to get out of their house to reach higher ground in the early hours of Monday morning. Rescue workers found her son and daughter-in-law clinging to a tree a few hours later. Apparently the old woman was too weak to cling on to the tree and was swept away.

My brother who lives 30 km from me has now moved in with a friend whose area is not flooded but has to leave his car and house to the mercy of the floods. The current floods has not spared our neighbours in Thailand and Vietnam. It seems the situation there is much worse than it is here.

Yesterday I managed to go out and snapped these pictures.

Beyond the point where I took these pictures the flood water is much deeper reaching 10 - 15 ft. Well it was not all gloom. Children seemed to enjoy themselves, oblivious of the danger: and some adults took the opportunity to cast their nets for fish.

That is very sad !! I don't know when our governments are going to wake up from the slumber and stop undisciplined growth and development in natural water drainage systems. In India also construction near the river banks etc and creeks obstructs the flow of water into the lakes and the seas, resulting in such flash floods.

The first picture shows Wat Chittraram, a Buddhist Vihara(Temple) in Thai architectural style. This is a beautiful temple just completed last year and serves the community in this village who are mostly of Siamese descent. Hope there is not much damage here.

We have a very efficient Fire and Rescue Unit that is kept very busy with the evacuation of flood victims. Some evacuees waiting to be sent to the evacuation centres. The floods is not without its humorous side too (the advertising banner put up before the floods).

Thanks Zainal. The floods in Kubang Pasu is subsiding and hope no more rain but the floods have now reached Alor Star and Perlis is still bad. Some friends are also stranded in Haadyai where the town has more than 10 ft of water. We are lucky in Jitra because heavy vehicles have been able to come through with food supplies.

Oh my God! Brings back terrible memories of our own floods here in Manila specially the dreaded typhoon way back known locally as "Ondoy" (international codename: Ketsana).
