    Default Den Chao Phraya Gem

I don't grow many dendrobes, may be 20 or so pots. But recently I had to get a few dendrobes because they are my wife's favourite. Some months back we came across these cute dendrobes and even I couldn't resist them. These dendrobes are Den bigibbum var compactum crosses and are very free-flowering on small compact plants 8 - 10 inches tall. The flowers are also correspondingly small about 1.5 in (4 cm) across. I bought 3 colour variants from white with purple centres to pink.

Before I could set them up for my photography session the wife had already 'hijacked' them and put them on her pot holder stand. So I had to do the best I could even to using flash which I don't actually like.

    Ooh, I love the last!

And I also get a kick out of how "20 or so" isn't very many for you.... ;-)

Your wife seems to have staged the dends very nicely. The first photo is beautiful!

    Thanks everyone for visiting.

@Gita: My wife says "thank you". I hope she doesn't 'hijack' more of my orchids because the pot stand is in the porch which isn't the ideal place for my plants.

@hcubed: "20 or so" as compared to my cattelyas about 250 and about 40 vandaceous.

Wow. That is a bunch of blooms. I think your wife did a good 'hijack'.

    Cheers,

    Hello,
I know this is an old post but I have this plant also and was wondering if you could give me just a little info on the winter care that you have given this type of Den. I see that you live in Malaysia, do your dens have a winter rest time there? Or are they the persistent type that wont need a rest? I live in Texas so we do have some colder weather here in winter, I bring the plants indoors and keep under lites or in south windows.
Was just wondering if you could give me some info on how you grow this type successfully.
    Thanks in advance,
    Cindy

I think our growing conditions here are very different from yours, Cindy. But here's how I grow mine.BTW these dendrobiums are what we term phalaenopsis type dendrobiums and are very undemanding culture-wise. I grow them outdoors, together with my other orchids, under 50% shade ; water them twice a day; foliar feed them weakly, weekly; repot them when they have outgrown their present pots. Unlike some dendrobiums these have no resting season and grow throughout the year and flower on every new mature pseudobulb, 2 or 3 spikes at a time and even flowering from old pseudobulbs.Remember I live in the tropics with constant temperatures of 80 - 90 F and more than 80% humidity.

This is a very friendly forum, Cindy, and we are always ready to help where and when we can.

Yes it is very different.!! We have those temperatures for like 4 to 5 months of the summer here only. And 3 of those months it is actually much hotter than that. But we do have high humidity also so that helps the plants a lot. I havent had this plant during summer yet so I will be glad to see how it feels about our summers.
I really do apreciate your help. It is well recieved.
    Best Regards
    Cindy
