Part one of my unidentified stanhopea

I posted a picture awhile ago of this plant but I will do so again when this opens fully.This year should be good as I outwitted the squirrels by hanging this under the underhang of the second floor of my house.Last year they ate both spikes because I wasn't home to move it under the underhang.This year I will have 3 since there is another one showing beside one of the maturing ones.

Wow, those buds look really good--very full! Our Stan is in a teak basket too, and I didn't take it out in time. I'm scared the buds aren't going to make it through the slats--should have put the plant in a wire basket earlier. But yours didn't seem to have any problem---

Louis--you shouldn't have any trouble.All my friends here who have stanhopeas & bloom them use the teak baskets.Mine always did okay when it matured.Now I have another one that just sits there doing nothing year after year

Mine has pretty much matured through the slats like yours has, and while it bloomed wonderfully last year, the basket is getting so crowded now that I'm worried the spikes on the new growth won't find their way out from the bottom any more. Is that one you say isn't blooming as mature as the one whose pic you posted? It might be that its spikes aren't poking through. I'm just going to bite the bullet tomorrow afternoon and cut the basket of ours away from the plant. Hopefully I won't damage the thing--I love how the flowers look and smell and don't want to keep the plant from blooming--it's due soon.

Hi Louis... I have scanned a number of pages from an old publication
called The Orchid Digest... specifically on Stanhopeas... and if there is any
interest... I would be happy to share them with the group...
species origins... and some cultural info as well...

The scans are at 300dpi... so they are VERY large... but when you print them... none of the detail is lost in the printing...

I don't know if there would be a problem with a copyright infringement... but the articles originate from the mid-1970's... and the author [Dr George Kennedy] passed away about 20 years ago... I believe the issues are also out of print... so the info might be hard to come by...

If you would like... i can send you a sample personally... and you can make the call at that time...
