Rob, I asked a similar question recently and at the bottom of this thread, Louis explained how the "new posts" thing works (or doesn't).

Hi all,
I signed in tonight and thought there were a couple of threads in the general discussion I hadn't seen before (Rant--started by Kewpie & I'll never take the weekend off again--started by MikeWa), but they were not highlighted (in bold) so I almost decided I must be mistaken. I decided to check just to be sure because I definitely did *not* recall those threads. Sure enough, totally new to me.
Shouldn't an unread thread (or even one with *some* unread material) always be highlighted? Otherwise how the are we supposed to know??
Worrying I'm missing out,
Rob

Thanks for that link, Ronnie Sue, it was fairly helpful. (And I'm happy to know I'm not alone.)
It does look like this is what happened, although I'm not sure it's entirely what's going on. I certainly had not been logged in for 2 hours--I'd just logged in. Oh, well, let's hope the new version which supposedly addresses this problem comes out soon--yesterday would be good! LOL
Cheers,
Rob
Rob,
I've found that if I log in and read some new posts, but not all, they're all marked as read anyway. So if you leave before you finish them all, you'll lose them. It's a pain because if there are a bunch you've got to wade through them all in one sitting (as I am now...)
Julie
Definitely a pain, I agree.
If you log in, even if for only five minutes, then log out again, all new posts will be marked as read.
VBulletin has been promising for a while now that the new version will address this issue and keep unread posts marked as unread if you haven't actually clicked on them, no matter how long you've been logged in, or how many times you log in and out.
We'll see what they come up with.
