Default Reed Stem Epidendrums in Bloom

Reed stem Epidendrums are supposed to be one of the easiest to grow. Some friends have been growing them in beds in the ground, right out in the sun. Unfortunately I have not been very successful with them. Recently I have been impressed by these perpetual blooming blooming orchids in my friend's garden and have decided to give it another try. I recently acquired two of these. One is Epi Hokulea 'Super Red' (origin - Hawaii) with scarlet flowers and the other Epi Rung Aroon ( cinnabarinum x ibaguense from Thailand) very large flowers for a reed stem epidendrum 2 ins x 2 1/4 ins. The Epi Hokulea is about 3 t tall, about normal for a reed stem epi while the Epi Rung Aroon is about 15 ins high.

The orange one is nice. I am not familiar with this type but I will now look it up. If it is easy to grow then it is for me.

These originate from Central America and grow under the same conditions as for cattelyas. They should do very well in California.

I like your choices in orchids Yew. I currently only have one Reed stem Epidendrum that grows like a weed, but I plan to purchase more. I like both these colors and isn't nice to have something ever blooming? AL

We have one similar to the orange one, Yew Sung. It is currently blooming too. Not sure on the name. This orchid grows in the gravel of the floor of the greenhouse here. I went out to snap a photo to add to your thread, but the blooms are already faded too much.

I really like the red one you posted here. Beautiful orchid bloom.

    Cheers,
    BD

Thanks BD. The red Hokulea measures 1 3/4 ins and that is bigger than the average reed stem type.
