keikis are pretty rare on Vandas and Ascds. If the tip stops growing, maybe crown rot for example, a new growth often emerges and takes over as a substitute. You don't show the iop , but quite often you can't see that this has happened even when you can see the top. The "rot" merely takes out the growing point, does not spread..
Spikes come from leaf axils ; you may have lost a leaf there and this is coming from where a leaf axil used to be, but that doiesn't often happen either ; most usually spikes come from leaf axils where the leaf still is..
Most probably then it is a root.
