    My most expensive orchids I have bought:

    Indigenous species - Vanda javierae, Vanda luzonica, and Vanda merrillii, 35.41 USD (est 2009)
    Non-indigenous species - Papillionanthe teres, 7.08 USD (est 1993)
    Indigenous hybrid - Phalaenopsis x intermedia "Rosea", 35.41 USD (est 2008)
    Non-indigenous hybrid - Dendrobium "Sonia Boom", 70.81 USD (est 1989)

    I don't usually spend that much on orchids. The most expensive orchid I've bought was a bulb + lead of a Cym LBS "Black Magic" for $50 (not commonly available in Australia) and I paid that with some reluctance. FWIW, I do put myself in the collector category but with a wife, kids and a mortgage, I know when to say no. I also know that with a bit of effort, a bit of patience and the right connections, a bit of good will can save you thousands. I haven't paid actual money for most of the rarest orchids in my collection.

    So far...... A seedling of paph kolopakingii var. album ('Albino Beauty' AM/AOS x 'Green Delight' HCC/AOS), bred by Sam Tsui of Orchid Inn. No, I won't disclose how much...
