Plan of action sounds good, I would just recommend one step in between, when you have unpotted the orchid, before letting it dry out, use a pair of tweezers to remove all the sphagnum moss out from the centre of the root ball, using tweezers will minimise damage to the roots and when the moss is wet it will come off easily, after that you can wash the entire plant and the roots clean of any residual old media, spray with a weak fungicide and let it dry before repotting in a coarse bark mix.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the outpouring of support and great advice! I'm so glad I posted here, as now I feel fully confident in what I'm doing, and that's what will motivate me to actually do it! Just ordered the new potting mix and fertilizer and I'll be back with an update in a few weeks or months!

@zrhanson - I agree that I will be likely be purchasing a few more orchids, now that I know more about caring for them and know where I can turn if I have any questions or concerns!

    Best,
    Chelsea

P.S. I'm actually at my parent's house visiting for a day and notice that all of my mom's orchids really need some TLC as well! Perhaps I'll buy some potting mix for her as well. : )
