Sophronitis cernua

I got a smal piece of this about a year ago. I mounted it on a cork. I did not think it was even growing, but TA DA!!!

I grow miniatures, too.

For the large flowered Laelia (purpurata etc), this does not shock me. For Sophronitis, it is more difficult to accept.

"New combinations and names are proposed in Cattleya to accommodate species previously assigned to Laelia and Sophronitis. These are needed in order to maintain the monophyly of the genus in light of recent phylogenetic hypotheses."
Thanks Mr Cassio van den Berg (Publication here). In 2000, Cassio VDB merged the bresilian Laelia into Sophronitis. 8 years later, he changed his mind !

I honestly dont give a rats what those...those people think (i was going to call them something else-thought better of it), Im happy staying with Sophronitis. The name change honestly makes no sense. Sophronitis is clearly not cattleya, i mean the flowers look similar, but there are differences, although it is easy to accept it as a part of the family.

Yes.
I prefer Laelia dayana than... Cattleya bicalhoi, or Laelia mixta than... Cattleya hoehnei, with the new combinations.

Now that is a special orchid! I love the mount and the bright, beautiful orange color of the bloom. Great growing, Naoki!

Very pretty, Naoki. Unfortunately just to admire but not to grow as it won't flower in the lowlands. For just purely selfish reasons I prefer Sophronitis as this tells me the catts and their hybrids to avoid- for growing under my lowland growing conditions.

Thats not selfish, it is entirely practical and logical Yew I do love the shape of these plants though, forget the flowers, the plants are just as cool!

This is a beautiful cernua. It has typical color for the species but clear and defined and petals are wider than others. A very well grown plant, even more for a division. Congrats!
As to name change, well......... that's what scientist are for. There has been a revolution in taxonomy since gene identification has become more widespread. We now know the reason why some species breed better between them, something that we knew empirically since a couple hundred years. Taxonomy also goes hand to hand with conservation and any effort to maintain orchids in the wild is worth the trouble of changing a name tag...........but I still call my tibicinis a Schombugkia (now Laelia).
