Every time I go to the big box stores I visit the house plants department to see what's new. But most of the time I do because I know there's a bunch of orchids that are getting left behind and not taken care of, so I'm always hoping there's a big sale.
Some of the employees know I'm a regular and they tell me when they have new arrivals or a sale.
This time I was gonna get only a bag of bark. Then I was talking with the new guy in charge when he asked me if I wanted to buy a bunch of orchids he needed to get rid of, and how much I wanted to pay for them. I told him I had way too many already but he insisted A LOT! so after 10 minutes of saying no he told me, Give me 10 bucks for all of them! So, I said yes... LOL
OMG! I don't have a green house, so I'm setting shelves on all my windows hehe
This is what I got:
1 Epc. Serena's Tinkerbell 'Paradise'
1 Encyclia profusa x sibling.
1 Lc. Purple Cascade Sweet Beauty.
2 Lc. Edgar Van Belle x C. intermedia x Blc. Magic Meadow 'Green Genius' 4w
1 Den Aggregatrem (isn't it 'agregatum'?)
2 Epic. Jackie Bright 'Hilo Stars'
1 Onc. Heaven scent 'sweet pea'
BTW they were 10 plants but one was dead hehe. I still think it was a good bargain, $1.00 each!
I also have a question:
I have a mix of western fir bark, charcoal, perlite and coconut chips.
Is it ok to use this medium for all these distressed orchids? thanks guys!!
Man, i've gotta go to that store.
yea lol, and i need to learn top grade smuggling.....
Dont worry Gabriel, we beleive you!
What a bargain! For the record, 'aggregatum' or lindleyi is correct.
Wow!! You are very lucky. Nice bargain .
You said the key words: "don't have a greenhouse" and "shelves on windowsills everywhere." This is the point at which you decide who and what stays or goes: people, furniture, breathing room, time to do non-orchid stuff, and (no, don't say it!) certain designated orchids themselves. I already have far too many and I STILL envy your boxstore bargain. Madness! Sheer madness!
Terrific!!
Congratulations, they look healthy enough. And yes, the bark mix you have should be fine. Most often the orchid mix used is not where the problems come - it is the way the person watering the orchids takes care of the plant. The mix should drain well and as long as you do not over water - should be great for your orchid plants. Since you have added so many plants to your collection, please remember to keep good air movement around and through them so you don't have issues with leaves staying wet. SO happy for you!!
Cheers,
BD
Congrats! I bet they were making room for all the seasonal stuff. I better go check my local big box store & see if they need me to help them out...
I'd have been talked into it as well! Even for twenty bucks!
