There is one orchid species which only (?) grows epiphytically on stag-horn ferns - but memory is not ready to divulge the name to me. I have not seen that one ( whatever it is ) but I have seen Dendrobium delacourii growing on it - but that species is so opportunistic, it would probably grow on my boots if I left them there long enough ; in an area which had been burnt through in a forest fire, I saw it growing lithophytically , terrestrially, epiphytically, and also - whatever the right name is - we'll have to invent one (!) growing on stags horn fern.
They are nice things ; if you ever get to Paris (France, not Paris Illinois or whatever - you don't mind me pulling my transatlantic cousins legs , as a mere limey, I trust ? ), one of the famous name nurseries there has a specimen several feet across, which has been growing there for very many years ( but without any orchids on it ).

Oh, I shouldn't think so - that grows anywhere and everywhere - even on the lamposts on the causeway from Singapore to Malaya !

We have a huge one of these in the greenhouse. It puts out spores and we get baby ones on the sides of orchid pots all around the greenhouse. I am always pulling baby ones out of orchid pots. They literally block up all the drain holes.

    cheers,
    BD

So much information for my insufficient "little grey cells"! How delightful it would be to be able to grow dendrobiums with this stag horn! I KNEW I was keeping it alive for more than one reason - just didn't know exactly what. Let's see, what would be an appropriate term for growing on a staghorn fern: stagophytically? Fernophytically? Thanks for the clarification on the great stag horn in Paris (France); as a New Englander, I would have assumed you meant Paris, Maine! Or maybe Paris, Texas? But any inducement to go to the original French city is warmly received.... I can be as opportunistic as the dendrobium that would grow on your boots, so watch out! And, by the way, an orchid with so little discrimination would suit me tremendously!

My goodness, Bruce, sounds like you have an invasion on your hands - maybe you'd better start sending the annoying little things to various OT members!

Not at all familiar with that one, Patty - can you say a little more about it? I'm very interested.

OK - you caught me! I was just so interested in this thread that when Geoff mentioned the orchid that would only grow..., I had to Google it then and there. That's how I came up with the name. BUT ... when I looked at Jay Pfahl's site, it had (of course) such a great-looking orchid that screams of a Christmas present. Check it out: IOSPE PHOTOS
