Excellent. I use to be able to do similar in south Tampa. I've moved off the coast and a little inland and what a difference in temps a few miles can make.

you know, i havent been able to get this idea out of my head... i've got a hankerin to empty out one of my bigger planter boxes (the herb box, we dont really need those anyway) and fill it with suitable stuff... then i could dump all of the street rescued dens i tend to ignore into it!! thanks for the great story and pics... has seriously planted the seed for a weekend project!

The stapelias have become one of my fav succulents recently I'm up to 5 species from the big grandiflora to the small flowering one you have in the pic.

Shane, I'm glad I inspired you. I thought "What do I have to lose" I really didn't want to fuss over them because they were so small when I got them. They rewarded me, they are my favorite den phal and constantly bloom especially when its HOT

MAX the stapelia is another carefree plant, it gives tiny purple flowers but I have to really look close to find them. Its a rambler though and I sometimes have to pull some of the length off

Thank you Kristin, I really let Nature take care of them. Apart from time-release fertilizer and regular watering, I do nothing special

I grow them with an Eastern exposure, so by midday the sun has moved away

Believe it or not those old hybrids are a gem....floriferous and hardy..I have Uni Wai white which is a selected Jacqueline Thomas bred for cut flowers In 1976 and am currently breeding from them with asian whites like Emma etc for cut flower purposes...I see great productive potential..as Jac thom often doubles and tripple spikes and usually pest and disease free
