That is great! how long do you think it took from sowing the seed to this? Do you have high humidity all year round? I thought seeds needed fungii to germinate. What are you going to do with it? repot it?

seed sowed on 28/12/11, so it took about 5 months to reach this stage. just repotted it and here is the pic.
weather is hot and humid throughout the year.

hi, needed some advice here. i notice part of the protocorn bodies is turning black due to some fungal or bacteria infection(my assumption). i cut off the infected part but basically there is not much protocorn left back there for me to cut. this morning i notice the black part is spreading despite after cutting the infected area and i smeared it with mancozeb and sulphur after it.

so can i removed all the protocorn bodies? the new growth is without a bulb yet, so i am afraid by removing the entire protocorn there will be no food source.
and to make thing worst, the main growth had been attack by slug in the center when i found this protocorn in the first place and that is why you can see a second keiki is growing at the side of the big one.

any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Hi Ian it's Catacetum congratulations one thing you cannot put the seedling like that so nice to the eyes of insects and snails, what you need to do is just mount the seedling to the piece of wood/fern roots maintain the humidity at the root level, usually it will work my worry now some of the protocom is brownish though is not good sign but you still have a hope, hoping it doesnt spread to the healthy seedling.

Ian, I have a different idea. IF the seeding were mine, First, I would mix one part bleach to nine parts water. Then, put the seeding in the water, and gently wash it, using a soft brush, to get into all the nooks & crannies. Then, rinse it off with plain water, and let it dry for an hour. THEN, mount it as suggested above. Put it somewhere it can get enough of a breeze. In addition to this, I will tell you that IF you have to cut into any orchid to get rid of rot, spray the place with alcohol, then brush that place with horicutural sulphur powder. This will kill any bacteria. By the way, a cleaning with bleach will not hurt orchids...I've done it many times, and it works! Hope this helps...Betty
