I've heard Catts love LECA as a potting medium but I haven't tried it myself. I do have several plants (mostly phals) in s/h and they are doing much better for me than they were in bark. I use translucent plastic pots for them so I can see the condensation. I'm slowly moving away from the "fancy" basket-inside-outer-pot s/h setup; it's so much easier just to have clay pebbles in a bucket!
I would repeat what Angela said I grow outdoors, using a mix of leca, charcoal, and a little bit of tree fern, plants love it. Yes you water more but in our downpours all I see are happy roots.
