    Default Red Phal root

I brought 2 large healthy phals a few months ago which I did about 2 weeks before I moved interstate. They were in moss so I re-potted them and discovered a single flat red root. I've searched all over the web but found nothing on this. It is not the purple/red from sun since this root was down in the moss. The roots out of the medium were green, while tohe roots in the moss were white (and after two months continue to be white...even though they protrude out of the medium).

Because this root intrigued me I left it at the top of the medium and it has grown quite considerably since re-potting.

Both phals are as happy as pigs in mud with firm roots so there doesn't seem to a problem. Any ideas?

Love your name, brings back lots of happy memories. I have a phal like that but it has since put out more red tipped roots, so I'm guessing that it's just a thing they do. I suspect the flat part is from it growing between something that wouldn't give it enough space to plump out. If it's growing happily then it not a big deal.

Why are there bright red small patches on the roots of a purple phal that I repotted today?
