    Default Something wrong with growths...

I noticed two oncidium growths aren't maturing normally. The onc has the habit of growing lots of roots before the pbulb even appears. But these new growths don't have a single root. But they already have pbulbs, which are only a about 1-1.5 inches tall (as opposed to 3-4" normally) and don't seem to be growing anymore. Leaves are considerabely shorter too. Basically, they look stunted. Never happened before to the plant--plant before had good sized pbulbs. The rest of the plant is extremely healthy...

If a growth refuses to grow roots, it can't get nutrients so it's stunted. And won't bloom either (imagine a spike coming out of a tiny 1" bulb, lol).

What's causing this reluctance to grow roots and the tiny size?
    Any ideas?

Hi Lily , Have the growing conditions been changed , light, Temp. fertiliser ? Is this the time of the year it usually puts on new growth ? are the roots on the rest of the plant good ? Sorry for all the ? Maybe it will start a new normal P bulb from a diffrent growing point ? Gin

    Hi Gin,
No, I don't think I changed the growing conditions much. I used to give it some direct sunlight (morning, or late afternoon) but I stopped that a while ago being afraid of the hot summer sun burning the leaves. Otherwise no changes in water and fert., always at the same place. Puts out new growth in spring/early summer. These 2 new growths have been there for a few months.

Roots growing great! All over the place, otherwise I'd be worrying a lot more than I'm worrying now. No prob w/ the ?s, it'll be great for the diagnosis of the plant prob...

That's why it's weird. Plant is great, suddenly puts out stunted growths. Maybe needs more water or fert.? no idea now...
    That's why

That is a mystery , I have heard that new growths will stunt if there is too much heat , but don't think that is the trouble , I had a Catt. bloom on an inmature out of season little growth after moving it from my green house to artificial light after we moved here the length of artificial light was longer . Might try increasing the water a little , just a guess . Gin

Here's a pic: thought it might help...

I looked closer and noticed parts of the leaves are accordion-pleated. Dryness causes pleated leaves, you're right! Strange, maybe dryness cause stunting too? Never had this happen before...

Note: roots are the corner of the pic belongs to another matured growth...
