This was given to me as a gift with no tags. There are 12 blooms which have lasted for over 2 months now. I love the ruffled edges! Can someone help me ID what this plant might be? Thanks!
And another view....
phal hybrid with a deformed flower.
---Prem
That's a pretty phal (I like it cause it doesn't look so much like a phal! lol)
I don't know much, but my first thought was also that something was "off" about the blooms.
Yes, it does look like a Phal hybrid with deformed flowers.
those new "vinicolor" phal hybrids have thick flowers and I've seen at least one or two clones with mis-formed flowers. However, I think that scalloped form is very reminiscent of blue crab shells...one of my favorite crustaceans.
Trying to write this quickly---forgive spelling
It looks to me like all of the flowers in the pic have the same "deformity," perhaps making that flower shape a particular phenotype of the hybrid, and not a deformity at all.
I for one think they look really cool!
And we should remember that when harlequin phals first appeared on the scene, they were looked on as such "deformed monstrosities" that many AOS judges refused to even consider them for possible awards.
And now look what happened!
Wish I could help ID your plant, orchid_fan.
If it develops a keiki, would you consider trading, keiki for a keiki?
That coloring looks very modern to me--kind of like electric ripples in a purple neon pool!
Louis, you have the best color descriptions around! Nice to see you, however quickly!
Hi LJA,It looks to me like all of the flowers in the pic have the same "deformity," perhaps making that flower shape a particular phenotype of the hybrid, and not a deformity at all.
Welcome back! Thanks for your assessment. I was starting to feel kind of bummed out that everyone was labelling my flowers as deformed. Glad to know the ruffled edges might be "natural" after all.
Absolutely! I'll keep you posted on how the plant develops. If it develops a keiki, would you consider trading, keiki for a keiki?
Don't be bummed, orchidfan. Your plant is lovely and the disdain for all things Phal is pretty rampant here, so don't take it personally.Welcome back! Thanks for your assessment.
