I like the orchid cabinet. Very nice.
Great work Magnus!!! Now I realise now how easy we have had it here. The effort you put in is simply amazing!
Thank´s everyone!
very professional set up
What a great show and a very neat growing area, the last 2 photos very creative and innovative technique to grow orchids which we dont have here in Malaysia my questions can those cabinet control the temperature, secondly since it's totally depend on electric, how much your bill each month as compared about 5 months ago very interesting? The last cabinet I can see how the moss growing very well i do believe if you put orchids seeds it will germinate for you.
I have no active temperature control in any cabinet, more than evaporation cooling on the drip wall. It lovers the temperature 2-3 degree Celsius when the front is open during daytime when the light is on.
I am happily unaware of how much extra I pay in electrical bill due to my growing light in my appartment! (I have had the majority of light from the day I moved in.) This is my hobby, and I take the cost, but as the electricity in Sweden still is quite cheap it is the fixed cost that dominates. Also Sweden do NOT have ANY electricity production from fossile fuels! mainly hydro and nuclear power plants.
The latest arrivial (last 5 month), the white growing cabinet is also neglegible. It has a 36W LED panel giving 3960 lumen for light and 3 12V computer fans for air circulation. Nothing compared to my other 500W+ of Metal halide and fluorescent light I have in the other setups from before.
I also live in an apartment and have all my radiators turned of, saving energy! The heat from my lamps and from the other apartment in the block is enough for heating... Even though it became a little cold when the outside temperature droped below -10 Centigrades for several weeks...
OMG Magnus, you need to get out a little more! lol. Seriously, tak for the pictures--this is quite a set-up. Much as I love orchids, I don't know if I would have the patience/drive/energy (no pun intended) to devote to this sophisticated a growing situation. I just hang mine under the palm trees or stuff them in cachepots on the lanai. The Tropical South coast of Florida makes growing here very easy. I may have to try some small set-up like yours when we move to the high Alps in Graechen, CH, in 2014. We will have plentiful solar electric, enough to sell to the grid, so I can have huge lights if needed.
My favorite Swedish/Norwegian uncle was named Magnus...
Very cool Magnus. Great problem solving with fixing up grow areas to work with your conditions.
I am so jealous! Did you but the first structure? That I could put in my house. Would be interested in details
