Haven't had a yard in...well...a long time. If I wanted to grow anything at all, it had to be indoors, and the most interesting things i could come up with to grow have been orchids.....they have slowly replaced most of my other plants.

My experiment with growing my Catts outside over the summer has produced dissapointing results. I have 3 in bud (almost open) now, the fall bloomers. I have about half dozen winter bloomers that are in sheath but no bud. Looks like about 25% of my Catts are not going to bloom at their scheduled time. Ususally I get a 95+% blooming every year.
I'm guessing that the outside stay is a big part of the problem. Despite my best efforts, it was, I think, just too dry (humidity wise). Had plenty of growth, but they are not sheathing/budding like they ususally do.
Soooo - I'm curious about other folks growing conditions. Please take the poll, and post comments.
Thanks

I have all my natives outside for obvious reasons... my Phals (yes I do have em), Paphs and Bulbos have been grown inside but I am now starting to send them outside, mainly because this hundred year old house does not have enough light.
I guess luckily we have fairly decent weather here in Sydney Oztralia, a couple of 40 celsius days but fingers crossed I can combat that with higher humidity when it happens... and when winter comes round again and if it is anything like the one we've just had, it might be yet again another mild one...
oh and they grow but well, I'm still figuring out optimums...
cheers

A few go out in the spring , A few Vandas till they spike ,and spiney the nodosa . the rest stay in . Gin
Some of my Phal hybrids in pot stay indoors all the time just because they can not tolerate too much water when it rains, all the species stays outside and only comes in in winter. Paphs (yeah I do have some Paphs, still figuring out how to make them bloom ) move in and outdoors, maybe thats the reason why they are not blooming, they are confused, LOL.
The catts, the dends, vandas and the others stay outdoors all the time.
Grow them indoors on the windowsill. Maybe I'm being overprotective but outdoors sounds quite dangerous to my orchids--notorious bugs, etc. etc., and I would have more things to worry about...is the temp alright? Are they getting burned? Is there water in the crowns? (too many extra questions if they're outside.)
I grow orchids indoors. It's because I live in Colorado- high elevation with dry air, low humidity, sun seems too hot for the orchids, we have hail or snow in the winter, there are bugs in summer and we get gusty wind. Maybe if I am able to build a sturdy GH.
I grow everything outdoors and in the Greenhouse untill they flower then they come indoors so I can enjoy the flowers. The more sensative plants that can't take to much sun stay in the GH where it has shade cloth. The others are just under son latuce where they get some shade but more light.
REALLY dependz woulda voted indoor/out if couldas.
I grow under lights during the winter months. When the weather stabilizes in May here ,I grow them outside on covered porches. They seem to really do well I guess the humidity here near ocean helps. I wish they did as well when I bring them inside.
