Default Using pint canning jars as flasks

I am thinking of using pint canning jars as flasks for my orchid seedlings. I have seen that several others are using them already. How are the lids vented to prevent contamination? Is a small (1/8 inch) hole drilled in the lid and covered with a bandaid really adequate?

    Thanks,
    Bob

A commercial grower use are mason jars (canning jars), these have a 2 part lid - the screw ring and the sealing plate. This grower replaces the sealing plate with a filter disc; fungus growers use the same technique.

I use regular canning jars all the time for mother flasks. I recycle wide mouth pickle jars ass my replates. I use a spot bandage as a breather in the replate jars. I've had very good success with this.

    Default Thanks!

Any particular brand of spot bandage? Can you sterilize the jars with the bandage in place or do you apply the bandage as the jars are removed from the canner? Thanks!

I process the jars with the original lid so they re-seal. This is so you can store them if you want to do a few ahead of time. I keep a few extra lids with a small hole drilled and a spot bandage applied that can be sterilized when needed. The bandage sticks well even when steamed or boiled. Any brand bandage works well.

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "spot bandage", can you clarify that for me?
