    Default Keiki paste on Phals

Question? I have used keiki paste on one of my favorite Phals that is struggling, it has produced two healthy keikis but only one has a small root. The leaves are strong, the one root is also very healthy. Will other roots develop later? Tha

Just be patient. The other roots will come and if not and your motherplant will die first you have a real good chance of having is saved by using the keiki paste. But be patient in the mean time. Don't cut off the young plant too soon!

FYI, I have heard that keiki paste can inhibit root growth

Thank you for your reply. The motherplant has two aerial roots. I will be patient.

You may be correct, I read other threads where the keikis had grown but struggled to produce roots. Will continue to monitor the plants progress daily. Thank you.

In my experience (documented on other threads), the keikis form quickly, but the roots can take several months to develop sufficiently for them to be separated from the mother plant. Three inches seems to be a good number. BTW, if you have 2 keikis or better a still-living mother plant, they like to be potted together, for some reason (hormonal?)

Keiki paste used when the plant is in its "leaf-growing" phase will generate leaves or roots, it seems. I haven't tried paste to encourage roots because they have come naturally (but very slowly). Maybe next time I'll try stimulating the roots...

We had a natural keiki on one of our Phals, it was there for a long time (months) and had nice roots when we separated it. It's still doing fine. Mother plant was a rescue - my neighbor gave her to me all wilted from underwatering. Said it had bloomed for months, but his wife forgot to water it and it was pretty limp and sad. It's doing great now, though hasn't rebloomed in the three years I've had it, but I'd say its in condition to do so next time it cools off enough. I'm sure the keiki was from stress. I ordered keiki paste and have three Phals in spike - I'm excited to see if I can get some keikis down the road!!

Kitty, next time try using paste on only 2 nodes...looks like you did 4. I've read that you should limit the number of keikis. I wonder if that has something to do with the slowness of root production (?) My keikis had 3" roots within 6 months.
