Here is my, what was purchased as paph phillippinense v alba, with its first bloom ever open. This is the first blooming of this orchid. It has one 'mature' fan and a new one growing. But the sepals on my alba are not twisty. So is that due to being a first blooming and will mature as the orchid matures or is not the orchid it was sold as?

Very well deserved award. I love this type of Paph, so delicate and over worldly.

How beautiful! Apparently the length of the twisted petal can vary between 10 cm to 22 cm (~4 in to ~9 in). The judges at the judging center were also discussing what the length should be. The twisting can develop more as the bloom matures. Our first fully opened flower was on April 28th and the twisting was still developing. Attached is a photo of our orchid on April 28th. By May 19th, it became more elaborate. Today, 6/15/14, we are finally seeing signs of wilting. But all 6 six blooms are still hanging on the stalk.

Your alba phillippinense is beautiful and very rare. Actually, I have only seen pictures of that variety. Yes, the petals will develop for 1 - 2 weeks. Until now Paph. phillipinense has received 85 awards in the US and pictures of them show that some of them had considerably short petals. Also, some of them had petals that were more or less twisted.
