My very first orchid (phal) has been growing CRAZY aerial roots...

This is my very first orchid ever and I've inherited it from my grandmother when she moved out of her old house.
I've had it for about half a year now. It has never bloomed in my care but it's been growing crazy aerial roots in the recent 2 months...after lurking on these forums for a whole day I tipped my orchid out of its clay pot to check out it's roots and it looks overgrown. Please see photos below!




Does it need to be repotted? Does it look like it needs anything else in terms of care?
I live in Toronto, Canada so the winters are very dry and this winter has been very long. That being said, I do live in a condo so temperatures are rather consistent all year round for this orchid.

Looks healthy. There are some rotten/dried roots which could be trimmed.It could benefit from a report in a slightly larger transparent pot in a light bark mix.

I concur with ksriramkumar, some expired roots could be removed and a repot would help it. Pick the pot once you have removed the orchid from the old pot, untangled the roots somewhat to get the old media out, then pick a pot the roots fit comfortably in and pot in it.

Looks a little dusty (which spider mites just love). The leaves look darkish, which could mean it isn't getting enough light to bloom. Also needs a fall cool-down to 60s at night in order to spike. Good luck!

Thank you for the replies! I'm going to dust him off and hopefully repot him tomorrow
Not sure what to do about the temperature variance, though with spring around the corner I might leave him beside a cracked open window

The plants looks very healthy indeed. I concur with other replies repot, untangle, remove and change old medium, trim dried roots, bigger pot.

I've repotted my phal today...a little worried the pot maybe too large, but the smaller version was too small
here's hoping this little guy survives my first repotting job!

Hopefully you used fairly large bark - Phals need air around the roots so good drainage is important. Be sure also that you pack enough bark in so that the plant is well supported and doesn't flop around, they are happier if well anchored.

It looks like you've done a great job with it so far, I hope it continues for you as it has!

I vote for repot too but not a large pot just one that is slight bigger. They like "tight feet". Trim all mushy roots. You wont get blooms if it is indoors all year. Why don't you leave it out in Spring thru to Fall in an outdoor area with morning or afternoon sun Or all day bright , dappled light. Good luck you may even get two spikes it has so much energy stored look at those leaves!
