Breaking a few roots is not going to kill the orchid. I always soak my orchid pot, with the orchid still in the pot, for about 20-30 minutes in a bucket with water that I also put a little Sea Kelp or any root hormone you might have. This will make the roots more pliable, then if it still will not slip out of the pot then I will use a very thin knife and run it against the inside of the clay pot very slow and very carefully to loosen the roots from the pot.
