The parentage of this hybrid includes 25% devonianum, which will account for the pendant spike ( which I love - although difficult to use such a plant - if it has many spikes - in a Society display because some of the spike will always be in the wrong direction ) ; also 25 % floribundum . Both of these tend to be chestnut or reddish brown colour, which will account for what we see here . There are 5 other species included in the blood-line.
I usually look up my plants in Orchidwoz, where appropriate, to see if my name looks correct ( no doubts here) and see how mine compares. And this is where it gets interesting. The clone Ruby Sunset has been awarded 4 times ( all in 2009) all in Australia, and all with very much paler colours. Now there is always a problem with digital pics and web-coding, and again the settings on a computer , but I have never seen such a big difference as here. ( anyone with Orchidwiz - check it out ! ) On my computer, withy the plant at the side of my screen, my pics are as accurate a representation of colour as I have ever seen. My flowers are also a shade larger than the Oz awards - they all have flowers said to be 5.3cm natural spread. My best flowers are 6cm , which incidentally is larger than any of the several different clones of this grex which have been awarded. I think I have a very good form of this clone, or the work in measuring and taking pics and producing the Orchidwiz entries was somewhere or other, not quite up to scratch this time. But I prefer to be smug and say Ain't I clever ! - ha-ha -.
