Love these huge orchid flowers. So pretty. The plant looks really healthy too. Just saw the one Bill posted. I need one of these.
Cheers,

Lord of the Ring fans will know a giant spider when they see one , actually the flowers are not giant by the standard of say Brassia lawrenceana, although they are pretty large. ( not actually pretty , either - to split a hair. But maybe magnificent will do ? )
The plant is in aa six inch pot, so you can get a good idea - bulbs maybe 5 inches high .
Grown in S/H following a technque I developed some 15-20years ago when i was having culture problems after moving all my plants to a new address with vastly changed conditions. Curiously it didn't work very well when I moved house again 7 years ago, and it has taken me some time to get back to a similar standard. But I think I'm getting there now.

Looks wonderful! Great growing. I miss my Shelob. Had her for years and she was such a prolific bloomer. One day it just started to look a tad yellowy and within a week it was gone. It was one of the most bizarre orchid losses I ever experienced.
Shelob. Hate that spider! worse still, they lost the spider from WETA Workshops! Now its roaming the NZ countryside! God help us!
Same cant be said about this orchid though, it is a real beauty!
Congratulations! That's truly a beautiful plant!
Geoff, the RHS now wishes us to call this Bratonia rather than Miltassia. Do you have any earthly idea why? (I thought maybe your physical proximity to them might help)
It gets worse and worse, you really don't want to know this...
Aliceara - or at least one of them, is now Gombrassiltonia...and if I got it right ( goodness knows how) Oncidium crispum - nice easy name that- is now Gomesa imperatoris-maximiliani...
but yes, all Miltassias are now Bratonias.
I am getting a bit tired of spending all my hours in the greenhouse printing new labels . I think I'll stick at present - maybe they'll all change back again next week ?
As to why, I don't think ordinary mortals can understand, but next week at my Orchid Society meeting I'll try and have a word with a member who is also a member of the RHS Orchid Committee - which means he gets to meet the real boffins from Kew who are also members of that committee , at the monthly meetings, and maybe he can get it in words of one syllable for us !
Yes, I just looked up the former Oncidium crispum, now Gomesa imperatoris-maximiliani. If this name was a case of having precedence, I might understand. But this name is attributed to Messrs. Chase and Williams, 2009, meaning they had a world of names to use, and they selected this. Will we wake up some morning and find this is a giant Monty Python send-up (I think the best we can hope for)? If not, there's a special place in hell reserved for these folks.
Geoff:
When a new change in name pops out I usually wait a year or more until the name "holds". Right now the name BRATONIA is not universally accepted. It seems that it precedes Miltassia (1957 vs 1958). At least they didn't fell too far from the tree! Miltassia = Miltonia x Brassia vs Bratonia = Brassia x Miltonia !!!!! What usually happens is that someone finds these discrepancies during a research and the name HAS to change according to nomenclature rules. That happened when Phragmipedium kocachii was described, someone else described it with a few days of difference (Phargmipedium peruvianum). Even with all the legal problems this species brought the first name stood.
Anyway you have a lovely plant. "Tolkien" was awarded an AM/AOS of 80 points with only eleven flowers in 1998.
Jose
It does give us something to talk about though !
