Flowers here about four and a half inches across, so quite spectacular. I have seen this species with as many as a dozen flowers, but that is very good going, and my plant not big enough or strong enough for that yet. I have been collecting Rossio's ( again) for the past few years . Most of the species are never seen in UK or anywhere else as far as I know. Just R.grande - once collected bare-root by the thousand and sold as "Beginners Orchids" - this one - much more rarely seen, and R.insleayi , which is even rarer. The picture is complicated by the only hybrid I have ever heard of - Rawdon Jester - made by an old friend of mine when he ran a large orchid business in the north of England ( now extinct, like almost all orchid businesses in UK). That is a cross between williamsianum and grande, and confusingly similar to both. We used to say - small flowers and lots, flowers in the Spring - williamsianum. Large flowers ( up to 7 inches ) and few - 5 would be normal, 9 is fantastic ( have seen that once only) and flowering in the autumn ( Fall to you ? ) then that is grande. But Rawdon Jester runs the gamut between all extremes, and can flower any time , so much doubt, confusion and room for argument ; which most judges seem to love.
But a nice "different" orchid and quite easy to grow given a dry but warm rest.
Love these. They always look spectacular in bloom.
I have always been a fan of what are now rossioglossums, but they are just a bit too "cool blooded" for my conditions, especially now that I moved south.
Great big flower! Very nice Geoff!
Among my favourites for sure!
That is lovely to see. It is bittersweet for me though because I grew a Rossioglossum grande while I lived in Sweden and the plant really loved it there. But here in Baltimore, even if I keep them indoors during summer protected from heat, it is still too warm for them so I gave them away.
Beautiful bloom Geoff!
beautiful!
Amazing.
