Hi, Suzi. Saw your post in another thread, so instead of hijacking that one, I thought I'd start a new one for you about what's a good plant to start with.
Considering your geographic location, I would lean toward plants that like heat, but that really doesn't narrow the field all that much, by itself. Can you tell us more about your windows - direction they face, obstructions like other buildings or trees, etc., and how much you like to (or have time for) "messing with them"? How about humidity and indoor conditions in the winter, too.
Some of the "first plant" decision should be based upon what you like the looks of, but considering that orchids are "niche plants" that have individual requirements, having that other info can help us get you pointed in the right direction.
