    Default Random Cattleya NOID

Just some random cat that is blooming right now. I brought it out of the greenhouse as a gift, or starter plant rather, for my fiance's brother and his wife. Kind of grand for a first plant! But you have start them off some where

Very nice - and if they don't like it...I think I would be willing to give it a good adoptive home...

If that plant doesn't get you to love orchids then I don't know what will!? I also thought that giving them a near specimen size plant would give them a little bit more room for error in learning how to take care of it. Plus I am only a phone call away, and a 5 min. drive so no real worries!

Very kind of you Aaron. We gave away a huge cattleya, similar in color, the same way to a newbie grower, but it did not make it. Our friend killed it with love (the liquid kind). When next we saw it, it was shrivled up and only had a couple of leaves and they were in bad condition. She gave up and now only grows phals. Lol.

Here is a photo of the night we gave it to her: (and yes, it was a few years ago.... - we looked like kids!)

That was a beautiful plant! It's ashame that it had an early demise. I already gave them a couple of starter plants about a year ago so they could get the whole kill'em with liquid love out of their system! At first they didn't want to listen then I got them a few books, and they realized that I was not just talking crap about not watering all of the time. They are a little more prepared to give proper care this time around!

Ouch, Bruce! That was a lovely plant!

So they killed it with an over-application of single malt? I've found that fertilizer works best with me. The orchids get a more balanced blend.

    Default *WOW*

    Gee, what a friend!

In my experiences, it is best to give a newbie a much smaller plant (maybe first or second blooming) that is VERY healthy. Nothing is sadder than watching such a specimen decline in inexperienced hands!!

I should know..I've tried giving away some of my monster NOID phals only to return a month or so later to find them in a dreadful state.
