Back when I started I would have said spraying for bugs/fungus/etc was a chore. But lately it has become one of my favorite things. In fact, watering makes me smile to see the green roots and new root growth. Spraying reminds me I will have fewer bugs and plants with strange problems that causes them to slowly die. And like above; I enjoy talking to my plants and touching their leaves to see how they are doing. I am sure my neighbors think i'm a nutty plant lady, but that's okay....i'm sure they also enjoy the pretty flowers....just like I do.

The temp is pretty much the same here all yr round, so not it isn't too much of a headache. Disease Control/Treatment & watering is the pain in my tooshie right now cause I'm new at this and I worry about the slightest thing. Gimme another 2-6yrs and I should have worked that issue out.

I know this is an old thread, but I am TOTALLY with John on this one. Other than that nasty chore, I'd say watering is a big hassle. With 170 orchids, it takes me several hours each weekend. Pests and diseases haven't been a big issue yet, other than the occasional spot of scale, which has been pretty easy to treat so far...I'm probably tempting fate by saying that though!

Hahahaha! I just took a break from my least favorite orchid chore to sit down and read the forum with a cold beer. Its spring cleaning weekend for us...I literally JUST finished organizing all of my orchid supplies. Media, chemicals, pots, ferts, sprayers, bottled water jugs(full and empty), etc. I LOVE all of the plant specific chores...when it comes to cleaning up after the chore, I am ready to check out! I'm sure this applies to quite a few of us who grow indoors much of the year. The kitchen sees more orchid action than cooking during the cooler months.

My absolute least favorite part of taking care of my orchids is figuring out what to do and where to put all my orchid stuff - with all the medium, pots, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, cachepots, watering containers, scissors, razors, knives, tweezers, fans, humidifiers, shelves, books, etcetera, I need another apartment if I really want to put things away in any kind of order. Right now, everything is always all over the living room. I used to have a cat that ruled over this apartment - now 150 orchids do. Wow - that's a ratio of one cat to 150 orchids - what would I ever have done with 150 cats??!??!!?

For me disease control is not a fun occupation. I only have select, very occassional outbreaks of bacterial or fungal problems. My main weapon against these infections is good cleaniness and aseptic/antiseptic practices. Once disease sets in the 'cure' or treatment is always harder on me and the plant. AL

My least favorite part is spraying for pests or disease...I only spray when they have a problem...but still...the fact that I gotta break out a nasty chemical and that my plants are ill makes me very unhappy.

On the flipside...I love fertillizing. Feeding my babies!
