    Default My new growing case

I made this case out of a 20 gallon fish tank. It got a home made humidifier, automatic dripping system for watering the mounted plants. I haven't got enough high humidity/low light plants, so I put in some SLC and phals there to fill up the space.

The fish tank is standing on its side, with the top opening facing the front. I bought a sheet of 12"x24" plexiglass and cut it into half to make them a door. Drilled some holes on the bottom of one side of the door for the fan. Cut out 1cm of the plexi on the top of the door to make a vent for the hot air out. Placed a shallow saucer in front of the fan and filled it up with water and put a humidifier filter in the saucer to wick up the water (I got this idea by reading the green house cooling system structure). The water dries out in 12 hours, so I have a water pump in a 2 gallon container to bump the water into the case to fill the humidifier saucer and water the mounted plants. The pump is controlled by a 1 minute resolution timer. I also has a similar setup in my office for my masdevallias.

Wow Qing! That's cool! It's great for small plants--and those, for me, are the hardest to take care of because they dry out all the time. Very clever!

    Nice job, Qing!

It looks so sterile though... Maybe some moss covering the bottom, or cork bark along the back wall to give it a more natural look?

You are right, it looks like a germination lab. This is why I don't call mine a vivariam, instead a growing case. Well, when I make the second one, I will consider adding a background.

Lay some sheet moss across the bottom and it will dress it up in no time!
