How long for roots to form on sphag/bag Phal?

Hi everyone!

I just had a quick question...I just took a peek at my phal that is currently "sphag'ed and bagged" and its not really doing too much..haha.

Is there a general range of time that it usually takes an orchid to start showing some new root growth? I know all plants are probably different...

All I can suggest is patience. How long it takes depends on the condition of the plant. Good Luck

I'm going to ask something too on this one. Apart from rooting hormone (which I have lost somewhere in the depths of my library/ dining room) and extra humidity to help minimise transpiration losses. SHould you give more heat? Less light?

I know, there are loads of other threads probably covering this out there and we should go look it up!

I think less light and more heat is definitely in order; at least that's what I was taught in school. Truthfully, I just have it sitting in the bag on my kitchen counter that is windowless, and its just warmer over there in general. Less light is a good idea bc you don't want to stress the plant- keeping it shaded will help it focus on producing roots as opposed to trying to photosynthesize without roots...haha

I'm hoping and praying that this phal decides to show some will to live...this is a plant I took from a co-worker of mine (and a high-level co worker at that!!)...so I really don't want to kill her plant! LOL

This time of year, phals generally produce roots after their Spring bloom. I bet you'll see some root growth soon if you keep the plant WARM and fairly well-lit (500 FC or so).

Make sure you don't bake it in a hot windowsill!

That's very interesting, I have a Phal Sweet memory which arrived a couple of weeks ago with a freshly cut off spike and it is now indeed pushing new roots out like there's no tomorrow.

Becky, I have a NOID Phal in a bag, it took about two months to show any signs of life but it now has three new roots and a new leaf! Using KLN helped a lot, I think that stuff can make furniture grow roots

Thanks for the advice- I think I may move it to a brighter spot. I don't want it to think that I've given up on it! I do open the bag everyday and talk to it, but it just sits there in disgust...
