But considering all the trouble you've told us you've had with excessive humidity/moisture and low light.... I'd probably use bark, too!

Mine came in bark and I kept it that way. Someone else in the forum mentioned that they have them in soil outside, so they obviously keep theirs differently.
Mine is in all bark. In fact I have tried to increase the coarseness of the bark and that seems to be good. Other terrestrial orchids like bark too though - ex. Paphs.

I've seen Cymbidiums grown in the garden in San Francisco, California. Plain old dirt with just a bit of perlite to break it up. Cymbidiums are "weed orchids" in certain areas of the country. (Basically, anywhere that stays fairly temperate (cool summer nights a must) and doesn't get much below 30F in the Winter.)
Like everyone mentioned..you have to tailor your culture to your growing area! (takes practice!)
Oh, I'm so affraid to pot it in a bark. People here hold them in a mix of soil and bark! I'll see. I almost killed my Cymb, and from now on, I consider them very difficult orchids to grow!
Yeah, Germany is great for cool summer nights and I think mine really likes the breeze now that I have it next to a window that stays open most nights.
Looks like a keiki to me , i think it will be fine , just leave it then you will have 2 plants , the kid will grow it's own roots . Gin
This kid now have 5 big leaves and absolutely no roots! And I noticed that it is starting to grow flower stalk!
Mother's older leaves are turning yellow... Should I cut off flower stalk?
I would say that's a spike. I have a Phal that just spiked. The new spike looked just like a little mitten! Now it has about 8 buds on it! These will be my first earned blooms! After a year of work, my wife and I are very excited!!
