Another possibility would be thrips,perhaps?
I don't know that I have ever been anywhere that there were no springtails...maybe in the desert sand?.....one of my old profs said there are even some arctic types that emerge in the spring thaw....they are very primitive.....anyway, I think there are very difficult to get rid of completely and they do have a function eating rotting vegetable matter

Thank you for your kind comments---I don't think there are a lot of us left out there in the world. I was one of 5 students in my class in college. I worked in SLC at the U of U, but they closed the regular entomology dept, or so I've heard. Most of the people that I worked with or had for instructors are now gone so it's not suprising you havent met one of us unique persons :-)
