I took a photo of the area I can make into a *grow room*. Any/ all suggestions welcome. Yes, this is a basement.

OT - is this also your kitchen? Or like, a second finished kitchen? Just curious. I was surprised to see your appliances in the basement. You know if you got to a point where you wanted more serious (HPS) lighting, not having it in a living space would be better. So, I was curious!

Get yourself a HPS system and you can then just about grow and bloom anything you want!

that area is massive compared to mine! There is a ton of things you can do there. Of course there is the 4 ft cart with flourescents. That option is nice cause you could wheel it over to the sink come watering time. Or as Peter suggested go with a HPS light or two and turn that whole room into a jungle! Lots of potential there!

I have about 8 feet wide X 4 feet deep to really get alot of use out of. I totally cleaned it out today. Before there were boxes filled with baby cribs and other garage sale stuff. It does look pretty huge now.

whats your budget? If we have a better idea what kind of money you are going to spend we can point you in the "right" direction.

for 700 bucks I would go with 2 metal halides and a light mover. I would build the benches out of wood and chicken wire (or equivalent cheap plastic) and have vertical sheets of chicken wire for the mounts. You would then have enough money left over for a humidifier and possibly a cheapo window mount ac unit, but that may be stretching it.

I am in the process of "upgrading" my grow setup as well. I am essentially moving from the windowsill and a 4 tiered grow rack with flourescents to a insulated shed. I will have 2 MH 400w lights on movers. I will have an air conditioner to keep the heat generated by the ballasts under control and I will have a humidifier. I am going to build the benches and have vertical sheets for the mounts. I think that a humidifier is important if you use an air conditioner, because they suck moisture out of the air. However just having mounted plants and or plants in SH wil increase your humidity quite a bit if you decide to just stick with fans and choose appropriate plants for the "climate" that gets created.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I have centeral air, but try and only use it at night. I also have a humidifier built right onto the heating system, so the house is at a constant 60%. I have a cheap humidifier I can use if it gets to dry in the winter.

I'm still afraid of s/h. Maybe down the road I'll try a plant or two, but for now I'm sticking with what I am good at.
