    Default Habenaria ciliaris

I found these growing along the side of the road in Pisgah National forest near Brevard, NC. A beautiful native species.

Those are very cool! I have only seen orchids in the wild in Hawaii. I know there are some here in Arkansas, but I haven't ever seen one. My orchid society had a speaker a few months ago and he gave time of year and locations to go and view some in the wild. I plan to take my camera!

    Cheers!

nice find! I'll be posting a few native photos in the upcoming week or so (just need to get a good shot of the white fringed orchid - Platanthera blephariglottis to complete the suite).

TADD, I imagine that they grow near you. My Dad is from florida and he has seen them down there so I imagine that they would grow around Charlotte

It's all a matter of timing...the ciliaris in north Florida are nearly done blooming at this point (a few stragglers remain), while the P. blephariglottis v. conspicua are just getting started. In general, fall bloomers will bloom earlier the more north you go while spring/summer bloomers will bloom later (although this is not always the case). Hence, you hear of folks seeing Pogonia ophioglossoides in bloom as late as July in northern regions while they finish here at the end of April.
