Cycnoches

It has been a long time, but I am back on track… I think… one never knows I guess for sure!

I am down from about 100 orchids now to 35, as last winter I had a bad heater and lost so many orchids. The ones I still have must have a very strong will to live.….

But that all is water under the bridge, as they say, so on with orchid growing and 2010 will be much better.

Ok on to my question…. I have 4 Cycnoches that are doing very well and one is showing a flower spike now.

What I kind of needed to know do you just leave the old pseudobulb
Till they dry up, or can you divide them when the plant is resting for the winter. And if you do will each pseudobulb produce a new plant. Or is it best to leave them alone and let the pseudobulb grow year after year, taking away any that are very old and dried up.

Laura so sorry to hear your lost. Ok for your information if you leave the old pseudobulb insitu it will shrivell and gone like a wind. My suggestion is just split the old pseudobulb, put on the moist sphagnum moss if you are lucky it will come out new keiki. You will get extra plant later. All the best and good luck .

thanks I will split the old pseudobulb... and hopefully I will get extra plants. how long will it take for the new plants to flower?

From the seedling 2 years, from the old pseudobulb depend on the size, the bigger the size of the pseudobulb the chanches to get flower very high. Like mine after I splitted the Cynoches barthiorum the pbulb about 7 inches, the new shoot once mature about 4 to 7 months later come out flower spikes.This genera is the most easiest to flower.

Sorry to hear about you loosing so many of your orchids, Laura. And Zain, I never knew that about cycnoches p-bulbs. I always thought they had to stay with the plant and that they were supposed to dry up and die away. I will have to give this a try!
