    Default Psychopsis Mendenhall in BLOOM

This hybrid has been blooming for close to two years now on 4 spikes and still blooming. Flowers are larger than the parent species, papilio.

Bloom has some very nice symmetry. Good one, Pete!

    Thanks!

The lip actually grew bigger after that picture was taken and looked more like a butterfly.

I have just been informed that Psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos' has won an FCC award winning 91 pts about 4 weeks ago in Louisianna. I can now add FCC to the label.

You don't happen to have any suggestions about how to get mine to spike, by chance? It's big and happy and still not blooming. Plus, I'll have to repot it by the end of the season, and I understand they sometimes sulk.

Also; at what point in the cycle do they spike? Between when growths mature and when new growth emerges?

Sue, give it some more light. The spikes appear when a growth matures.

Can someone explain "Mendenhall" to me - I just don't get it.

I want a Phal. mini mark Mendenhall, and people have indicated that p.mm. holm is the same. I don't get it . Perhaps I am just not with it. I know it is a growers thing but... hmm, still don't get how Mendenhall and Holm can be the same.

Thanks - sorry for being such a you-know-what!

    Heather,

I'm sorry I don't understand your question but Mendenhall is the name given to this particular Psychopsis hybrid. The same name could be given to any other plant.

I think "Mendenhall" is a name used by Carter & Holmes (orchid co. somewhere in the U.S.). I've seen Mini Mark 'Mendenhall'; I've never come across 'Holm'. There have been instances of people renaming plants, knowingly or not. For instance, Phrag. schlimii 'Wilcox' I believe has been awarded 2 or 3 separate times, all under different names. Cardinale 'Wilcox', schlimii 'Birthwood' if my memory serves me. Also, more recently, I saw allegations from a prominent orchid grower that another prominent orchid grower renamed a clone of a very big pink vanda and got an FCC. Orchid growers are a strange bunch.
