What is this under the orchid leaf?

This orchid was given to me by a lady, who was disposing of all her orchids. After repotting this Cattleya(?) some of the roots needed cutting away, I noticed these 2 leaves, out of about 10 on the bulbs. The second picture is the underneath of same leaves. What is this? I get paranoid about viruses, especially when I have 40 orchids myself.
Can the experts help me?

What's the texture of the black on the underside of the leaves--is it powdery, mushy, or dry? indented?

Hi Kathi. The black on the leaf is dry. Cannot wipe it off with a tissue. Also the same 2 leaves have that mottled effect? When I repotted this orc. 2 wks ago, I didn't notice it then, but it may have been there from the start.

I would cut the pbulb off immediately. As deep into the potting mix as possible and then clean the area around the cut and apply an anti fungal.

PS I have a Scottish Fold, almost 15 now.

At least its not mushy. I agree with Diane, I'd sacrifice the pbulb to be safe, and I'd watch the rest of the plant to be sure it stays healthy looking. Good luck--

Kathi, is it possible it could be chlorosis? I did a google on the Mosaic virus, it looks very similar. Anyhow, I have done the surgical bit, and sprayed the whole chid with a fungacide, so here is hoping. (and isolated it, it is in Coventry). Thanks

Well, as I understand it, chlorosis just means lack of chlorphyll, and can be caused by a number of things, from a nutritional problem to a virus. Unless you wish to send a sample off for testing, I don't think there is a definitive way to know if it is virus or not.

i have had that on some of my cymbidiums and on my odont alliances, and it just goes away after a while, but i dont know why. You could try using some of the fungus eating ladybugs, but i dont know where you would find them.

I don't know what it is Jordan, but I did the safe thing, by lopping off that part of the rhizome, spraying the rest with fungacide. Here's hoping. All good to you.

I am dealing with EXACTLY the same thing. I'm suspecting virus. All plants I got from one particular vendor have looked like this eventually.
