Default 13th annual Orchid exhibit at the Smithsonian

    Hi All,

I don't know if I can post a link to this, but the 13th annual orchid exhibit starts tomorrow Jan 27th at the Smithsonian Natural History Musuem. From the website: Orchids will be displayed naturalistically rather than submerged in mulch as is typical for such exhibits. Information on orchid ecology, pollination biology, symbioses, evolution, phylogeny and the work of Smithsonian Institution researchers is interspersed on display panels throughout the exhibit.

    Should be cool

I think that's the one Colin went to a year ago. Definitely post pictures - they had some amazing plants!

Heres some pics from the show, in short it was crowded, noisy, and full of people not really interested in the display. And this is somewhat sad because I thought the display was really well done. The room (40x150ft?) was packed with various epiphytes, tropical foliage, orchids, even a bubbling brook in the undergrowth.

    Heres s'more photos,

I thought the lineage poster was interesting. Anyone know of research institutes that work to map genes and linkage with orchid species?

Wow, that orchid family tree with the asparagus is so odd. I did not know that they shared the same family tree. Very cool photos too. Thanks!
