Phal spike turning red...

Like the topic says, the spike on my phal has gone red. It dropped it's flowers last week and now the spike is red - I was away for 4 days and didn't see this happening. It's withered up top where the flowers were, as I expected, but it seems to be damaging the rest of the spike - the top is a dark, dry brown. Nearest the plant it's pink, then a node up it's red, and above the third node it's brown, like the top.

Should I have cut it back sooner?

The spike is just drying up and eventually it will turn brown but its nothing to worry about. Once your plant is ready to bloom again, then it will grow a new spike. You can either cut the spike off right now or let it dry out and just break if off. If you do decide to cut it off right now, make sure to add some fungicide to the cut. Cinnamon works really good!!!
